OUR MISSION ORGANIZE SCIENCE The original promise of computing was to solve information overload in science. But classical computers were specialized for retrieval and storage, not pattern recognition. As a result, we've had an explosion of information but not of intelligence: the means to process it. Researchers are buried under a mass of papers, increasingly unable to distinguish between the meaningful and the inconsequential. aims to solve this problem. Our first release is a powerful large language model (LLM) trained on over 48 million papers, textbooks, reference material, compounds, proteins and other sources of scientific knowledge. You can use it to explore the literature, ask scientific questions, write scientific code, and much more. We believe models should be open source and so we open source the model for those who want to extend it.Home Explore Mission Paper PaperExplore “At Meta, we believe the way to advance AI research is through an open, transparent and reproducible process. We also believe that progress is best served by inviting a wide and diverse community to participate and provide feedback. The Galactica research paper, model, code, and corresponding demo are intended for the research community and are not being used in production. At launch, we outlined the limitations that come with large language models such as Galactica, including the potential for it to generate inaccurate and unreliable output, even though Galactica was trained on high-quality scientific and academic data. We believe it is critical for the public to understand the strengths and weaknesses of these language models in an open and transparent way. We also believe this is the best way to get feedback on these systems, and learn how to mitigate the weaknesses. However, given the propensity of large language models such as Galactica to generate text that may appear authentic, but is inaccurate, and because it has moved beyond the research community, we chose to remove the demo from public availability. Our models remain available for researchers who want to learn more about the work and reproduce the results in the paper.' About Galactica
Galactica is a company that aims to solve the problem of information overload in science by providing a powerful large language model (LLM) trained on over 48 million papers, textbooks, reference material, compounds, proteins, and other sources of scientific knowledge. The company's mission is to organize science and provide researchers with the means to process the vast amount of information available to them.
Galactica's LLM can be used to explore the literature, ask scientific questions, write scientific code, and much more. The model is open source, allowing researchers to extend it and build upon it. However, the company acknowledges the limitations of large language models such as Galactica, including the potential for inaccurate and unreliable output. As such, the model is intended for the research community and not for production use.
Galactica's target market is the scientific research community, including researchers, scientists, and academics. The company's LLM can be used in a variety of industries, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and academia. The main use cases for the model include exploring the literature, generating hypotheses, and writing scientific code.
Galactica was made by Papers with Code and Meta AI, and its managing director is Joelle Pineau. The company believes in an open, transparent, and reproducible process for advancing AI research and invites a wide and diverse community to participate and provide feedback. The company's models remain available for researchers who want to learn more about the work and reproduce the results in the paper.
In summary, Galactica provides a powerful large language model for the scientific research community to help organize science and process the vast amount of information available to researchers. The model is open source and can be used to explore the literature, generate hypotheses, and write scientific code. The company believes in an open and transparent process for advancing AI research and invites a wide and diverse community to participate and provide feedback.
